Little Shilpa is Alice In Wonderland’s Mad Hatter come to life, and with her mind-bending designs, she’ll happily guide you down the rabbit hole. One of Lady Gaga’s favorite designers, this charming little genius will captivate you with her out-of-this-world designs. Casually referred to as the Philip Treacy of India and the next John Galliano of accessories, we’re counting on her to break records in more ways than one.
Officially Mumbai’s very first milliner (a.k.a one who makes hats), her creative designs will push the bounds of your imagination. Having received her education from Central St. Martins, she then trained under hat connoisseur Philip Treacy before going on to become a designer, stylist, artist, jewelry designer and milliner.
Her tools range from plastic bottles, geometric glass pieces, feathers, aviator glasses, rubber chappals and everything you would never expect to see as part of headgear. Neon acrylic cuffs, extravagant feathers, Ikat headpieces and flamboyant Mohawk abstracts are only a few of the tools in Little Shilpa’s design arsenal.
Her work strikes a chord with today’s boundary-pushing pop culture and is the perfect balance between fashion and art. She displays some of her work as runway collections, others as art exhibits. Not one to limit herself to any of the restrictions either creative field possesses, she’s devoid of boundaries — enabling her to celebrate her craft on her own terms and conditions.
When asked about the biggest mistake people make in her industry, Shilpa had a clear answer. “In my opinion, if there’s anything that should be taken care of, that is repetition.” Little Shilpa admits to absorbing all her inspiration from ‘all they call street’. She already has a cult following with her diversified, out-of-the-box masterpieces.
Little Shilpa is certainly the future of Indian fashion. We can’t wait to see what she comes up with next.
