2012 Oscars Fashion – Celebs Rock Sleek Lines, Sequins and 1920s Styles

On paper, the 84th Annual Academy Awards is a night for celebrating the year’s best films. But for Luxemi and other fashionistas, the biggest awards show of the year is all about celebrity fashion. Here are five Red Carpet looks from the 2012 Oscars that we know we’ll be smitten with for weeks to come.

Gwyneth Paltrow at 84th Annual Academy Awards

Gwyneth Paltrow may not have been nominated for any Oscars this year, but her sleek, sophisticated take on the classic white dress makes her an absolute winner in our book. The actress was elegant and chic in a floor-length dress and cape handpicked for her by celebrity designer Tom Ford. Gwyneth looked sophisticated and polished wearing the cape on the Red Carpet, but she was equally as gorgeous when she took off the cape and let the dress’ long lines do the talking. While she was presenting an award with Robert Downey Jr., we couldn’t keep our eyes off the dress’ beautiful asymmetrical slant, subtle gathering and modern aesthetic. Fans of layered organza and high-volume dresses, take note: A simple, clean silhouette can be just as stunning!

Best Supporting Actress winner Octavia Spencer Academy Awards

Years from now, we know we’ll still remember Octavia Spencer’s tearful acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actress. But we’ll also remember how confident and classic Octavia looked in her crème Tadashi Shoji gown. The dress’ gorgeous gathering and intricate swirled sequin pattern play up Octavia’s figure in all the right ways and make her a vision of Old Hollywood romance. Add in a graceful boat neck and elegant short sleeve cut, and you’ve got a gown that’s absolutely stunning and every inch as glamorous as Octavia herself.

J Lo at Academy Awards 84th

If there was one fashion trend at the 84th Annual Academy Awards, it was crème colored dresses with heavy sequinning. Although Octavia Spencer’s dress was our favorite of the gowns that fell into this category, Jennifer Lopez also makes Luxemi’s Best Dressed list. The shimmering mermaid effect in J. Lo’s daring Zuhair Murad gown accentuated the singer’s curves and gave her an all-over glow. A wide, deep V-cut neckline and cutout sleeve detailing was edgy and chic against the dress’ feminine color palate. And did we mention the gown’s stunning striped sequin work?

Michelle Williams vintage brooch dress 84th Annual Academy Awards

Michelle Williams won rave reviews this year for depicting the iconic Marilyn Monroe, so it’s only fitting that the actress went vintage at the 2012 Oscars. Gorgeous 1920s inspired gowns are quickly becoming Michelle Williams’ signature style, and this red Louis Vuitton dress is no exception. With delicate frills, a classic peplum skirt, and a form-fitting bodice, the vibrant gown made a bold feminine statement. This dress is beautiful without major accessories, but the chic bow brooch pinned to its waist elevates this look to the top of Luxemi’s list.

Alexander McQueen gown oscars 2012

When it comes to luxury designers, few pack as much couture drama into a look as the legendary Alexander McQueen. Given its bold, edgy statement and heavy gold detailing, it’s no wonder that fashionistas are either loving or hating the strapless Alexander McQueen dress that Jessica Chastain wore to the Oscars. Jessica’s black goth dress features heavy gold embellishments in a butterfly-inspired shape throughout its bodice and picks up gold threadwork again near its train. The bold detailing and color palate in this gown remind us of the decadent Indian design aesthetic we love so much. Jessica Chastain definitely made a strong statement, but what fun is fashion if you can’t take a few chances?

Berenice jewelry Academy Awards 84th

And we can’t end this post on the 2012 Oscars without mentioning a few of the night’s show-stopping jewelry looks. Gwyneth Paltrow’s heavy, diamond-studded Anna Hu Haute Joaillerie cuff added the perfect flash to her white Tom Ford dress, and Octavia Spencer’s 20 carat diamond and platinum chandelier earrings had a subtle Indian influence that wasn’t lost on us. Tina Fey’s gorgeous sapphire and emerald Bulgari earrings added some much-needed vibrancy to her custom-made navy Carolina Herrera gown. And aside from Michelle Williams’ vintage Fred Leighton bow brooch, our pick for statement jewelry goes to The Artist’s Berenice Bejo. Her megawatt emerald and diamond drop earrings are something we wouldn’t mind having in our jewelry box!
