With five days of gorgeous, vibrant colors and funky warm-weather looks, Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2012 has us excited for the summer season! Here are the best (and most provocative!) collections from Lakme Fashion Week 2012.
We’ve long been big fans of Indian designer Paromita Banerjee. Using comfortable, airy fabrics ranging from Indian cotton muslin to Matka silks, this chic designer’s Summer 2012 Haat collection is full of vibrant patterns and casual summer silhouettes that are easy and fun to wear. Paromita explained that the collection was inspired by Indian street wear, and we can see why. Traditional techniques we love such as Bandhani were heavily featured in the collection, but there were unexpected twists as well, such as super-modern kurtas, jackets or tunics with undeniable East-meets-West appeal. One of the designer’s standout looks was a chic dress with vibrant block patterning paired with a comfy cotton tie blouse. Paired with sandals, this look says jet-setting summer wear all over it. And the fashion world is also talking about Banerjee’s neutral cotton pants and modern tunic look. With pretty tangerine and mango stripes at its boat neck and front tie, this short-sleeve tunic features a lot more design than first meets the eye.
Our pick for best use of a signature print goes to Masaba Gupta, whose Summer 2012 Sorbet collection puts an urban twist on the saree and salwar. The designer’s edgy signature pattern features old-school cameras in different shades of crème and black; it’s a gutsy print that surprised us, in a good way! We were blown away by Masaba’s pairing of a fitted jacket in the signature print with a bright yellow Patiala salwar. The jacket’s sleek modern lines, Mandarin neckline and deep V neck were stunning. And even the looks that didn’t use the camera print were evocative: We fell head over heels for the vibrant, sorbet-inspired color combo and bold embroidery in this spin on a classic salwar silhouette.
Even though we’re smitten with Masaba Gupta’s modern, urban designs, there’s nothing as beautiful as a well-executed saree. And when it came to classic Indian fashion, Bhairavi Jaikishan’s Summer 2012 collection reigned supreme. With a feminine color palate filled with ivory, crème, gold and white, Bhairavi’s sarees and lehengas prove that you don’t have to compromise tradition to achieve beautiful modern looks. When we saw these three sarees move down the runway, romance was the first thing that came to mind: With gorgeous sheer detailing and delicate embroidery work, Bhairavi Jaikishan’s collection is lavish, intricate and as timeless as the modern Indian woman.
When it comes to sand and sun, the designers at Lakme Fashion Week sent some of the most gorgeous swimsuits we’ve ever seen down the runway. Ultra-chic swimwear designer Shivan-Narresh’s Mosaic Summer 2012 collection was retro in all the right ways, all the way up to the funky mod headwear each model wore down the runway. We love how this geometric swimsuit uses color and pattern to put a new twist on the 1950s. And between its high-waisted bottoms and interesting halter top, this suit has plenty of features that will get you attention at the beach! For a twist on the beach cover-up, this yellow, white and baby blue block patterned top is a must-have. Some interesting notes about this collection? It was inspired by abstract painter Kandinsky’s works, and the swimwear was stitch free and resistant to UV rays, sunscreen oil, sand piling and curling.
For the avant-garde fashionista, no show at Lakme Fashion Week came close to the drama and strong point of view of Little Shilpa’s collection. We’ve always been captivated by the cutting-edge hat maker. Whether or not you like Shilpa Chavan’s collection, there’s no denying its colors, volume and stunning headpieces make a bold statement. What do you think of Little Shilpa’s Disney-inspired collection?
