Although she enjoys wearing her fair share of bright, radiant colors, Priyanka isn’t one to shy away from classic neutrals either. It helps that this is the colour of the season too!

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s Desi Style Statement

Aishwariya Rai Bachchan style file

Whether it’s her alluring persona or a killer blue eyes, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s elegance has made her the queen of hearts all over the world. Soon after she was crowned Miss World in 1994, the actress quickly rose to fame and became a name synonymous with beauty and grace. Cited as ‘the most beautiful woman in the world’, it’s no surprise that her sartorial platter is full of interesting treats.

While she is usually spotted in black, the dazzling diva isn’t afraid to take risks on the red carpet either. What we truly love, though, is her desi style. From flowing anarkalis to regal embroidered suits, Mrs. Bachchan’s iconic Indian style never disappoints. We’ve got the lowdown on her killer desi style.

Red Haute Diva

Aishwariya Rai Bachchan style file

From Manish Arora’s kitschy prints and Jade’s alluring anarkalis to Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla’s fabulous creations, the dainty damsel keeps turning up the heat. In fact, she steals the spotlight even in a simple, understated churidar kurta combination. Not to forget, her penchant for bold, red lips — somebody call 911 already!

Luxemi Pick: You too can go the red haute route with our Crimson ‘Sitara’ Salwar.

Pastel Party

Aishwariya Rai Bachchan style file

Although Ash isn’t afraid to go bright and bold, she does have a soft corner for pretty pastels as well. After all, who can resist the charm of peachy pinks and minty greens? The summery hues of the Manish Malhotra’s blingy sarees and Abu-Sandeep’s simple suits that she sports are completely refreshing!

Bejewelled Goddess

Aishwariya Rai Bachchan style file

They don’t call Aishwarya Rai Bachchan the epitome of elegance for no reason. The actress knows that the secret to amping up any look is accessories. Whether it’s polki and kundan jewellery, decadent gold and silver baubles, or traditional jhumkas and chand balis, she always has her jewellery game on point.

Luxemi Pick: Aishwarya loves her gold earrings. Why not try our Gold Hoops with Pearls to channel your own inner goddess?

Sabyasachi’s Doe Eyed Muse

Aishwariya Rai Bachchan style file

If you’re a keen observer of her style, you’ll notice that Ash absolutely swears by Sabyasachi. Known for the aesthetic appeal of his work as well as his eye for detail, Sabyasachi doesn’t design clothes; he creates masterpieces. Of course, no one makes a better muse than the Miss-World-turned-actress, flaunting his intricately embroidered creations with élan.

Abu-Sandeep’s Poster Girl

Aishwariya Rai Bachchan style file

Bollywood’s sweetheart has another favourite designer, or rather, designer duo – the dream team of Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla. They always make her shine in their flowy silhouettes, with striking embellishments, turning her into eye-candy for the paparazzi (and all of us) every single time.

Behind the Scenes: Deepica Mutyala’s Indian Wedding Makeup Tutorial

On Set With Deepica Mutyala and Stefanie Syat

Deepica Mutyala isn’t new around these parts. You may recognize her from that insane red lipstick video that went viral earlier this year or from the beauty advice she regularly doles out on social media. We love how she makes beauty approachable with a slew of tips and tricks to make our lives just a bit easier, and of course, way prettier. With our favorite (wedding) season in full swing, we’re already looking for fresh inspiration because how many black smokey eyes can a gal do, right? So how pumped were we when we found out our favorite beauty guru was filming an Indian Wedding Makeup Tutorial? Answer: Very. We got the full low down PLUS a few extra tips that didn’t make it in the video below.

Who: Deepica Mutyala and Stefanie Syet filmed by Jami Saunders & Andre Costantini. Hair by Jeff Chastain and Apparel/Accessories by Luxemi.

What: Indian Wedding Makeup Tutorial

Where: Jami Saunders studio in FIDI

Extra Makeup Tips from Deepica:

1) Contouring: If you don’t have dedicated contour products at home, try using your bronzer or a foundation that’s a shade or two darker than your skin tone which gives you the same effect.

2) Concealer: Go heavier than you normally would for a wedding. By picking a concealer that’s a shade lighter than your foundation, you get a natural illumination on your skin, but it’s super important not to go TOO light either. That’s when you see chalkiness!

3) Hair: I did a twist on a traditional braid for my look. My favorite thing to do for weddings is take traditional looks and give it a modern twist. That applies for hair too!

4) Highlighter: Glowing skin is a must for desi weddings! If you don’t have a dedicated highlighter at home, use a shimmer pale eyeshadow and apply it to the parts of your face you want to pop. For me, that’s the bow of my lip, under the brows, corners of the eyes, bridge of the nose, and the bone under your eye.

Katrina Kaif’s Top 5 Desi Looks

Katrina Kaif Style File

It’s hard to look beyond a face as pretty and angelic as Katrina Kaif’s. Let’s be honest, she could wear a sack and make it work! No wonder this British beauty keeps her sartorial choices simple and fuss-free, letting that fresh face of hers do all the talking.

While sheath dresses, solid colours (with a major partiality towards black and white), comfortable sweaters and simple tops are her trusty staples, she does indulge us desi girls with quintessential Indian looks every now and then too.

It’s easy to spot a pattern though. She heavily favors clean, simple hues with a hint of pop and lots of Manish Malhotra. No draped drama for this lady—she is a purveyor of old-school cuts and silhouettes. Think floor-length anarkalis, traditional saris and lehenagas. Considering how much we love new-age, avant-garde Indian wear, we’ve got zero complaints here. We round up some of her top desi looks. We approve, and we’re sure you will too!

Go For Glam

Katrina Kaif Style File

Hello gorgeous! How beautiful is this unabashedly glamorous dull gold Manish Malhotra lehenga with a hint of pink and red? We especially love the hangings on the blouse. It helps that head-to-toe gold is a trend du jour too.

Luxemi pick: Steal her look with our Gold Cutwork and Crystal Mukesh Saree.

Coral Wonder

Katrina Kaif Style File

What makes this otherwise simple salwar work is the positioning of the slit. This look goes to show that a simple tweak to a same ’ol outfit can make all the impact. We love that she went easy on the jewelry and let her ensemble do all the talking.

Luxemi pick: Skip the gold churidaar and team this Orange Salwar with Asymmetrical Hem by Nikasha with cigarette pants in the same color.

Shine On

Katrina Kaif Style File

Katrina Kaif in this Manish Malhotra shows that one should never underestimate the power of a sequined sari. From your BFF’s wedding to a cocktail party, it will come to your rescue on many occasions. The addition of a contrasting color blouse really elevates her look.

Luxemi pick: Our Red Screen Print with Gold Sequins by Satya Paul fits the bill.

Black Beauty

Katrina Kaif Style File

This Anamika Khanna look is a classic case of elegance in simplicity. The addition of the cutwork jacket takes the floor-length kurta a few notches higher, giving it a slightly Indo-western feel. Add statement earrings to take it next level.

Luxemi pick: Give the dupatta a miss and wear our Georgette Salwar with Gold Foil Print with a gold bolero or vest that you already own. It could even be a high street buy!

Code Blue

Katrina Kaif Style File

This floor length jacket teamed with a lehenga in all about understated, royal grace in our books. It is an impactful look without screaming for attention and can easily be emulated for a winter wedding.

Luxemi pick: How about wearing our Chiffon Jacket with Gold Embellishment by Kisneel with a voluminous skirt in the same color or gold, perhaps?

Birchbox’s Deepica Mutyala on Beauty Tricks for Indian Women

1267672_10200820443303905_31534944_o (1)

At the ripe age of 16, Texas native and now beauty maven Deepica Mutyala had set a goal—that she would move to New York City and ignite her dream of working in the beauty industry. And that’s exactly what this University of Texas, Austin graduate achieved. After stints with companies like L’Oréal USA and L Brands on Victoria’s Secret PINK, Deepica now works as a Senior Manager in Brand Development at Birchbox in NYC. Getting makeovers by Beyonce’s make-up artist (!) and being exposed to the biggest brands in the beauty biz is all part of typical work day for this gal (sounds terrible, right?).

We caught up with this makeup maverick for a quick tete-a-tete on the best beauty trends for Indian women, common mistakes, must-have products and more! Pssst…she even threw in some cool insider trade secrets!

Luxemi: What are the most common beauty mistakes Indian women make when dressing in traditional wear?

Deepica Mutyala: I don’t think there should be any rules with makeup. It should be about your mood and how you feel whether you’re in Indian or western clothes.  Indian girls tend to stick to red lipsticks as their go-to with Indian ensembles but mix it up and have fun, I say! You can completely change the way your outfit looks by just changing your hair and makeup, thus allowing you to repeat that sari at the third wedding of the season (that is, of course, if you haven’t already discovered the beauty of Luxemi!).

Bollywood_Stars_and_Their_Favourite_Lipsticks_2

What are the latest beauty trends that will lend themselves beautifully to Indian wear?

  • Plum lips and bold brows! I especially love plum lips with white Indian outfits and I am definitely not a believer in the ‘no white after Labor Day’ rule.

MKD_9237

  • Braids: I don’t think Indian girls play with braids enough because they fear that it’ll look too traditional. But there are so many ways to experiment with them. My current favorite is a voluminous messy fishtail. It’s a great way to stand out in a room full of straightened or curled hair.

Screen Shot 2014-11-17 at 5.57.16 pm

  • Contouring: Contouring is still having its moment and lends itself perfectly to Indian wear. Who doesn’t want defined cheekbones and glowing skin, right?

Screen Shot 2014-11-20 at 5.40.43 pm

5 must-have beauty products a desi girl’s kit ought to have?

  • A brow pencil: You know how threading your eyebrows completely changes the look of your face? Filling your brows lends the same effect! It’s a product most Indian women don’t realize they need (because they already have dark, thick brows) but can’t live without once they see the difference it makes.
  • A bold lipstick: I am loving plum lipstick right now. A classic, high pigment plum that I love is M.A.C Cosmetics’ Rebel, but if you’re looking for a light berry shade, I recommend the Cynthia Rowley Beauty creamy lip stain in Dahlia. It’s layerable, so you can add coats for intensity and personal preference.

Screen Shot 2014-11-17 at 6.02.32 pm

  • Concealer: I think if you surveyed all Indian women and asked them what their number one beauty concern is, we would say dark under eye circles. Since I battle this problem too, I like using a heavier concealer that also has brightening properties. My current favorite is the Vasanti Instant Pick Me Up Color Correcting Illuminator in shade CC 4. It has the glowing effects that everyone loves from YSL’s Touche Eclat with the coverage power of M.A.C Cosmetics’ concealers—the best of both worlds!

vasanti_instantpickmeupcolourcorrectingilluminator_cc3_900x900_1

  • Highlighter/Illuminator: If you want radiant skin, I have two tips: drink tons of water and find a killer highlighter. I especially love the way highlighter looks when I’m in Indian clothes. You can instantly tell the difference in pictures when you do and don’t wear it. I use a cream highlighter because I have dry skin. My current favorite is the Bio Brightening Stick from W3LL PEOPLE. The stick format makes it really easy to apply.

w3llpeople_biobrightenerstick_moonstone_opened_900x900_2

  • Beautyblender: I’ve never met a makeup artist who didn’t have a beautyblender in their kit. The difference in how your makeup applies is unreal with/without it. It’s especially helpful when you’re contouring to blend with zero streakage. I can’t go back to using any brush again now. Make sure to wet the brush to where it doubles in size before using.

Indian celebrities who nail desi-dressing makeup according to you?

I love the versatility of Deepika Padukone’s beauty looks. She always mixes it up, from dramatic smoky eyes/bold lips to more subtle natural glows. She also gives me major brow envy.

nextek

It’s also really exciting to see Mindy Kaling’s makeup looks evolve. I love that she’s not afraid to experiment with different looks across both fashion and beauty and you can tell she’s having fun with it.

Insider beauty tricks you’d like to share with us?

If you have extreme dark circles, use a bright red or orange lipstick as a base under your eyes before applying concealer. The bright pigmentation of the lipstick evens out your skin tone. We work with celebrity makeup artist Daniel Martin at Birchbox and he mentioned that this is one of his favorite beauty tricks to use on Mindy Kaling. Major game changer!

Most people apply mascara outward going towards their ears to create a sort of cat eye look. But for a more wide-awake makeup look, apply your mascara inward. By re-directing the lashes this way, your eyes will pop and look more refreshed. I learned this trick from Mally Roncal who has been the go-to makeup artist for celebrities like Beyoncé and Jennifer Lopez and now has her own beauty line called Mally Beauty. The products are all extremely brown-girl friendly (high pigments)!

Get The Look: Alia Bhatt

Alia Bhatt in Vogue

Vogue India, September 2012

Bollywood’s newest entrant, 21-year-old Alia Bhatt, hasn’t just wowed critics with her acting credentials but has also quickly climbed fashion charts to become a celebrity style favorite in a short time. Considering she was groomed by Karan Johar and that her first magazine cover was Vogue’s September 2012 issue, did you really think it would be any other way?! We love this spunky young gun’s no-holds-barred attitude and fuss-free approach to fashion — she knows she’s a looker but doesn’t try too hard to hog the limelight — and that is exactly what makes her a winner in our books. Here’s how you can snag her style in three simple ways!

Color Crush

Alia Bhatt in bright colors

When in doubt, wear a statement color! At least that’s what Bhatt swears by. She doesn’t seem to be one to go overboard with prints; instead keeps it simple in bright solid colors for utterly fuss-free looks. Throw on statement accessories to complete your outfit when opting for something similar.

Luxemi Pick: Dusty Pink Mukesh Saree with Bronze Feather Border

Crop It Like It’s Hot

Alia Bhatt in crop tops

This newbie shed oodles of weight for her Bollywood foray so it’s no surprise that Ms. Bhatt has taken to flaunting her freshly toned midriff in a smattering of crop tops. Whenever she turns to them, she makes sure to maintain a delicious balance between neon pops and netural hues.

Luxemi crop top

Luxemi Pick: Gold Stretch Satin Blouse with Embellished Neckline by Kavita Bhartia

Layering Love

Alia Bhatt in layered indian wear

Bhatt’s petite frame demands that she add more dimension to her looks, which is why she is often spotted in layered Indian wear — and that, more often than not, translates into dhoti pants with a kurta and vest.

Luxemi Pick: Coral Red Tie Front Jacket Salwar with Floral Embroidery

Indian Wear You Need To Invest In!

New age Indian silhouettes according to FLW designers

Gone are the days when one’s desi repertoire was limited to a sari, lehenga or salwar. We’ve witnessed nothing short of a revolution on the traditional wear front (one thats brought a multitude of options) and we’ve lapped it all up! No surprises there, right? So we roped in some of the top designers from Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort ’14‘s roster — Sonam and Paras Modi, Monica & Karishma, Sonaakshi Raaj and Arpita Mehta — to tell us the Indian silhouettes the Luxemi girl just can’t do without! We hope you’re paying close attention.

Sonam and Paras Modi

New age Indian silhouettes according to Sva

Left to Right: Sva floor length waist dress, Preeti Desai in Sva jacket style dress

Sonam and Paras Modi behind the label SVA say, “Indian women today are very fashion conscious and want to look their best at every occasion. She wants to carry on traditional rituals but with a difference. The jacket style dress and a floor length low waist dress are a must for her. The statement jacket style dress with subtle embellishments promises a timeless and classic look. There’s no going wrong with it. The low waist floor length dress, on the other hand, enhances one’s curves and is very flattering. It is a modified version of the kalidar kurta and is very trendy and youthful. The sheer back makes for an appealing look, hence its popularity with brides.

Monica and Karishma

New age Indian silhouettes according to Jade

Left to right: Asymmetrical lehenga, sheer net lehenga and three-tiered anarkali all by Jade

Monica and Karishma of Mumbai-based label Jade say, “The modern Indian woman is all about being experimental — traditional with a twist. Reinvention is the key so she should opt for a three-tiered anarkali. Layering lends a regal, timeless vibe to the look while the new-age silhouette turns heads owing its dramatic nature. The second must-have is the asymmetrical lehenga! Paired with a chic corset, the asymmetrical lehenga is all about cutting-edge styling and having a blast. A sheer net lehenga with an embroidered border is princess-like in its appeal. Pair it with tights for casual decadence!”

Sonaakshi Raaj

New age Indian silhouettes according to Sonaakshi Raaj

Left to right: Deepika Padukone in Sonaakshi Raaj sari-gown and Anamika Khanna dhoti sari

Sonaakshi Raaj gives her vote to sari-gowns and dhoti saris. “These silhouettes are the epitome of east meets west and are ideal for a cocktail party or wedding reception. They promise a look that’s elegant, chic and sexy without getting into the hassle of draping.”

Arpita Mehta

New age Indian silhouettes according to Arpita Mehta

Left to right: Soha Ali Khan in Arpita Mehta jacket and Neha Dhupia in Payal Singhal high waist skirt and crop choli

Aprita Mehta is all about the high waist skirt paired with a crop choli due to its flattering nature. “It’s apt for the Indian body — hiding the flaws and accentuating the thinnest part of the waist all the same time. The end result is extremely sexy and glamorous. The second promising trend is the traditional vest/jacket in different lengths paired with either a skirt, sharara or dhoti pants. It’s stylish and can be spruced in multiple ways making each look different.”
