Untitled-1 copy

Have you ever wondered who dresses Bollywood’s most fashionable ladies? The sartorial stars behind the stars, if you will. We’ve rounded up the country’s top super stylists for you fashion fanatics. Remember these names, they’re the ones who’ve changed the game and made Bollywood just as stylish as Hollywood.

Sonam Kapoor: Rhea Kapoor

Sonam Kapoor is Bollywood’s original fashionista, the one who introduced high fashion and off duty style to the industry and sent other actresses scampering for stylists of their own. While Kapoor herself is very fashion forward, an avid vintage shopper and a self-confessed clotheshorse; it’s her younger sister Rhea who has a lot to do with the outfits we see her in. Together, the two can be touted as India’s very own Olsen twins. Always one step ahead of the crowd, Anamika Khanna and Elie Saab are mainstays on the sisters’ favorites list but they also champion emerging designers like Sanjay Garg, Neha Taneja and Dhruv Kapoor among others.

Deepika Padukone: Anaita Shroff Adajania

Bollywood’s reigning queen Deepika Padukone is styled by the high priestess of Indian fashion herself. Thanks to Anaita Shroff Adajania, Vogue India’s fashion director, the gorgeous actress never makes a fashion misstep. Adajania completely transformed Padukone’s look post Cocktail, both on screen and off. Now the duo always surprises eager fashion hawks with one winning looking after the other. Nothing is off the charts for this fashion power couple.

Kareena Kapoor Khan: Tanya Ghavri

Bollywood’s favorite Begum, Kareena Kapoor Khan, has got more than enough swagger to teach the new kids on the block a thing or many. Her personal style is a master class in how simple is always sophisticated and fuss-free equals effortless. Her personal stylist, Tanya Ghavri (who also styles a host of other stars like Frieda Pinto, Jacqueline Fernandez, Karisma Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Alia Bhatt and Shraddha Kapoor) never steers far from Khan’s comfort zone when dressing her—ensuring that the looks are the right balance between trendy and timeless.

Esha Gupta: Sanjana Batra

bollywood-celebrity-stylists

With a face as stunning as that, does it really matter what Esha Gupta puts on her back? She could wear a sack and still top best dressed lists. Her stylist Sanjana Batra confesses how Gupta is herself very fashion conscious and always has a pulse on the newest trends and designers to know. More than a glorified designer mannequin, she frequently concepts her own looks. The thing about Gupta, who looks good in just about anything, is that she’s always sporting gen-next Indian designers, and that gets a major thumbs up from us.

Malaika Arora Khan: Tanya Ghavri and Maneka Harisinghani

Screen Shot 2015-01-21 at 1.50.34 pm

Owing to her sex appeal, oomph and abundance of poise, Malaika Arora Khan owns (and how!) every look she wears. From plunging necklines and daring hemlines to more conservative outfits, there’s nothing she doesn’t absolutely rock. The stunner, whose repertoire is almost always topped off by cascading waves and a perfect pout, used to be styled by insider favorite Tanya Ghavri. She has recently moved on to Maneka Harisinghani who is giving her style file an uplift with slightly more demure looks.

Dress like Deepika Padukone — Bollywood’s Favorite Fashionista

Deepika Padukone in Vogue September 2013 issue

Deepika-Padukone, Vogue India September 2013

Deepika Padukone is our latest Bollywood girl crush. This doe-eyed beauty has earned some serious style cred with her recent super chic sartorial picks, making one thing very clear —this stylista can do no wrong. Ever since her movie Cocktail, she seems to be on a style roll, putting only her most fashionable foot forward. When I interviewed her a couple of months back, she simply brushed off this ‘style icon’ tag saying that she blindly trusts her stylist when it comes to her appearances (modestly skipping that not everyone can pull off the looks she does). And the stylist in question, Vogue India’s Anaita Shroff Adajania, constantly seems to be pushing the envelope when it comes to Padukone’s wardrobe. Here’s a round up of the looks we love most on her!

Deepika Padukone in monochrome outfits

Monochrome is a hot favorite with this B-town’s fashionista and it’s a look she wears well. Take a cue from her and slip into our Black and White Hand Painted Saree by Satya Paul. Accentuate the look, as Padukone often does, with a pop of color by way of footwear, accessories or red lips.

Deepika Padukone in muted colors

While most people shy away from muted colors for the fear of looking dull, Padukone (seen here in Sabyasachi and Ridhi Mehra) seems to have the trick to wear it down pat i.e. create talking points by sprucing it with statement earrings, an interesting updo and a radiant smile. Add this hue to your repertoire with Luxemi’s Peach Anarkali with Zari and Gota Work and Peach Burnout Saree by Satya Paul.

Deepika Padukone wearing Rachel Roy jumpsuit

But that’s not to say that she skips out on color all together. The fashion fraternity’s it-girl can pull off the most daring colors with effortless élan. We love this Rachel Roy jumpsuit she was spotted in recently. For those of you scouting for a similar desi ensemble, look no further than this Short Flare Salwar by Kisneel.

Deepika Padukone in lace outfits

Another trend Padukone has been quick to embrace is lace — be it in the form of dresses, tops or traditional wear. Our Gold Embellished Chantilly Lace Saree promises a touch of elegant sophistication, reminiscent of her looks.

Deepika Padukone in kundan set

And now for the look we are totally swooning over — a winning juxtaposition of old-world charm with a contemporary vibe — is the pairing of traditional/kundan jewelry with western silhouettes. Snag this look easily with our Geometric Gold Kundan Set and Gold Kundan Collar and Earrings worn over a cocktail gown or LBD at your next formal soiree.

We’d love to know what you think of Deepika Padukone’s style too. Tell us in the comment box below!

Luxemi Interviews Fashion and Celebrity Stylist Kushal Parmanand

Sonakshi Sinha in Hi! Living

Sonakshi Sinha styled by Kushal Parmanand for Hi! Living

Fashion and celebrity stylist Kushal Parmanand jokingly refers to himself as an “Indian fashion industry fossil!” And considering he’s got over 10 years of experience under his belt, we get why (well, kind of!). His foray into the industry was one most can only dream of — he kick started his career with revered couturiers Abu Jani & Sandeep Khosla after which he moved on to working with Nandita Mahtani. Styling came knocking his way in the form of a Fashion Directorship at Seventeen India, followed by stints at L’Officiel India, L’Officiel Homme, Hi!Blitz and most recently Noblesse India. His stellar repertoire also boasts of styling Bollywood beauties like Bipasha Basu, Sonakshi Sinha and Sonali Bendre among others. We engage the stylist du jour in an exclusive tete-a-tete!

Kushal Parmanand

Celebrity and fashion stylist Kushal Parmanand

Luxemi: How did you foray into fashion? Is it something you always wanted?

Kushal Parmanand: My foray into fashion was actually by default. I come from a family of two generations of engineers and they obviously wished for me to continue their legacy. After trying to pursue an education in computer science and management studies for two years, I finally landed at Fanshawe fashion school in June 2000 to pursue my true calling. I remember wanting to be in fashion, a designer in particular, since I was in 8th grade. Rohit Bal was my idol then.

Luxemi: You have worked with some of the country’s top stylistas — right from Sonam Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor to Deepika Padukone and Katrina Kaif. Who are your personal favorites?

Kushal Parmanand: I think I have the biggest crush on Bebo (Kareena Kapoor)! She is undoubtedly my favorite. She is extremely easy going and a breeze to work with. Most celebrities today know what works for them and are quite fashion focused. Having worked with many of them editorially over the years I feel that working collectively and keeping common interests in mind helps get the best out of a shoot!

Luxemi: Who are some of your favorite Indian and international designers?

Kushal Parmanand: Wow that is a very tough and long list! I love the work Riccardo Tisci does for Givenchy couture. This seasons in particular; I am loving key pieces from Balenciaga, Monique Lhuillier and Vionnet while Elie Saab, Dior, Valentino and Lanvin remain eternal favorites. On the Indian front I love different designers for their varied focuses. Anamika Khanna, Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna, Rajesh Pratap Singh and Gaurav Gupta are my favorite veterans. From the younger lot I am partial to Kallol Datta, Sailex and Nachiket Barve.

Actually I feel fashion is a bit fickle in that sense — every season you are bound to love that someone a little more purely because their showing tugged at your heart strings more than the others.

Luxemi: Autumn-Winter ’13 Indian wear trends that ought to be tried this season? Also tell us about the top colors one must have in their wardrobe?

Kushal Parmanand: Monochrome continues to be a huge trend this season. Punk and vintage inspired fashion is also big. Think of smaller ways to include them in your traditional wardrobe. Red is THE color to be swearing by — not only is it one of our most traditional colors, it also looks lovely on Indian skin. Make sure to experiment with interesting updos and accessories for a refined look.

Luxemi: Style icons who carry Indian wear beautifully?

Kushal Parmanand: I think Deepika (Padukone) looks great in Indian wear. She has an inherent grace about her, almost like royalty. Apart from her I think Kareena (Kapoor) looks her best when she is in a sari.

Luxemi: Your favorite picks from Luxemi.com

Kushal Parmanand: Laila Motwane’s lehangas, the coral wrap kurta from Nikashasaris by Neeru Kumar and jhumkis  from Amrapali are my top picks. The wine salwar with shell embroideryFoil Printed “Club” Pallu Saree by Satya Paul and Flowing Net Anarkali with Embroidery by Kisneel are also great options.

Luxemi: If one has only 10 minutes to put together an Indian look, what should be their go-to?

Kushal Parmanand: The chotu sari (one with a shorter hemline) is a great option.

Nandita Thirani sare

Pre-pleated saris and sari gowns are easier to drape, making them ideal go-tos as well. If neither works for you, there is always the humble salwar kurta which has many interesting variations this season. I personally always steer towards a minimalistic look. Finish it off with a dash of a strong lip and a messy braid or updo — absolutely perfect when you’re on the run!

Guest Post by Shaadi Belles: Get the Bollywood Looks You Love- For Less!

Editors Note: Luxefans, you’re in for a treat. We get a lot of requests asking us to re-create some of our favorite Bollywood looks and the amazing gals at Shaadi Belles have done just that.  Let us know which ones you love in the comments!

When planning for a wedding or any function, every girl looks to the red carpet and the runway for some style inspiration. But every girl also doesn’t have the ability to pay those red carpet and runway pricetags. So what’s a belle to do when she’s lusting after a must-have outfit but is stuck with a limited budget? We picked five of our favorite trends and are showing you how you can quickly and easily get the look you love while paying a whole lot less, thanks to the gorgeous collections at luxemi.

So Fresh and So Colorful

The fastest and easiest way to add a fresh and bright touch to a traditional lehenga is to add a dash of color. Think outside of the usual reds and maroons and look for outfits that incorporate hints of pinks, oranges, and yellows to make a stunning style statement. Parineeti Chopra walked the runway for Maheka Mirpuri’s “Khwab” collection in a sparkling orange and gold lehenga. The bright color added a fresh and glamorous twist to the traditional outfit that we love. You can create a similar look with this brocade lehenga available at luxemi—the bright pink dupatta adds that pop of color that we love. Don’t forget to add loads of gold accessories for even more sparkle!

Neutral Nets

Want to add some subtle elegance to a sleek net saree? Choose a neutral-colored outfit for an elegant and timeless look. Neutrals pair gorgeously with gold embellishments for a perfect bit of sparkle to the toned-down shade. No one does neutrals better than Shehlaa Khan, and plenty of Bollywood’s leading ladies (including her BFF and muse, Sonam Kapoor) agree! Kajol once wore a stunning nude-colored Shehlaa by Shehla Khan saree covered with sparkling gold embroidery for a public appearance—a classic up-do and minimal jewelry were the perfect finishing touches. This gold-sequined saree available at luxemi is all you need to recreate this gorgeously classic look. Add a sleeveless blouse for a sleek and sexy take on the traditional drape.

Graced in Lace

Lace sarees are one of our favorite new trends, especially in the warmer weather! The light fabric is the perfect way to add a quintessential feminine and romantic spin to any outfit, especially one as classic as a saree. Pastels and softer shades especially shine in lace—we are lusting after a light turquoise lace saree Deepika Padukone recently wore to a public appearance. The soft color turns even more elegant thanks to the lace fabric. Luxemi once again saves the day with this stunning purple chantilly lace saree. Keep the jewelry simple for a daytime function or add a statement necklace and earrings for a more formal event.

Royalty in White

One of our favorite takes on the recent anarkali trend has been the growing popularity of angrakha-style dresses. Dating back to the Mughal era, angrakha tops feature a kurta top in which one side overlaps the other and is tied with an ornate tassel. The result is a look that is as regal as it is glamorous. Take your ode to royalty a notch higher by choosing a classic shade like white, the way Bipasha Basu did when she wore a stunning Armaan by Sunaina Puri white angrakha suit. The fitted top paved way for a flowing skirt that had this leading lady looking every part the royal. You can be the princess at any party in this white angrakha suit—gold or silver jewelry will each pair beautifully with this timeless shade, take your pick!

Amaze in an Anarkali

The anarkali trend is one that’s here to stay, and we couldn’t be more thrilled. This universally-flattering outfit looks good on nearly anyone, and designers can’t seem to get enough of this elegant look. The latest suits are deep in color and high on style—collared necklines, longer sleeves in sheer nets, and tons of embellished embroidery, are just some of the ways designers are taking this traditional outfit and adding a modern dose of glamour. You are guaranteed to see at least one stunning anarkali dress at nearly any Manish Malhotra runway show. His recent collections have showcased a rich color palette—including deep purples, blues, and pinks—paired with brocade borders and sheer long sleeves. For those of us that don’t have Manish available on speed-dial, this stunning brocade and aari-embroidery suit (bonus style points for that asymmetrical hemline!) available on luxemi does the trick when we want to channel our favorite Bollywood style guru.
