Layering Necklaces 101

MG_9664

Want to update your look with some stop-and-stare intrigue? Layering necklaces—the “it” accessory trend of the year—is the fail safe way to go and it’s what style set and fashion frat is swearing by too! That’s pretty much all the convincing we need to jump on this utterly chic bandwagon.

Throwing on a range of necklaces in varying lengths and textures adds diversity and movement to a look. It also gives us fashionistas a free playground to mix and match like a boss. What’s more, you can flaunt a bunch of your eye-catching buys in one go. And while there aren’t any pre-prescribed rules to layer, a few ace pointers will ensure that you’ll never go wrong with this accessorizing style!

  • Start small. Start with the smallest necklace and then add bolder pieces to the mix. Starting with a choker or dainty pendant works well.
  • The next piece works wonders if it’s in a different style, say a bar necklace added to a choker, for instance. Finish with a flourish—the longest chain necklace would be our pick. And voilà, you’re good to go!
  • Make sure the outfit you pick is relatively fuss-free. Clashing metals over embellished blouses will just make the look too distracting—you need your layered wonders to be the highlight of the look, after all. Pastels and clean cuts with minimum print usually work best with this kind of accessorising.
  • Multiple chains instantly elevate a salwar or kurta. So skip the dupatta—let your baubles take center stage. An overcrowded look is just going to play spoilsport.
  • Don’t constantly fidget with your army of chains in a bid to set them. Let them fall where they may. Micro managing these strands will only complicate things—let physics take its natural course and focus on wearing your beauties with the confidence they deserve.
  • Diversity is the king, Adorn chains in a plethora of varying lengths and styles. Aim for contrasting aesthetics. For instance, we can’t think of anything more head turning combination than a gold temple jewelry choker with a soft pearl strand for a well curated effect.

Mega watt Indian destination weddings are the best kind. And while any reason to pack our bags and get away is a good one, one that involves our closest friends, Bollywood moves, fabulous traditional wear and copious amount of champagne is a sure winner! After bringing you the ultimate destination wedding packing guide, we just had to give you a destination wedding dressing 101 too. After all, what you’ll wear to a beach wedding will be infinitely different from what a palace wedding demands. Our guide is here to lay all your burning questions to rest!

Destination: Udaipur, Rajasthan

Nothing but a royal look will do for a wedding in India’s palace capital. Always wanted your very own princess moment? Here’s the perfect opportunity! And if you’ve been complaining about all your beloved lehengas gathering dust, then what are you waiting for? Pack them all without further ado! We suggest a nod to traditional prints and fabrics like gota patti and brocade, topped off with polki jewelry.

If only attending the pheras in Aztec bikinis and flip-flops was allowed! But since you can’t, bring out your breeziest Indian wear instead. We’re placing our bets on white and ivory picks — serene hues to complement sunset nuptials on the beach! Steer clear of saris and OTT anarkalis. Lightweight salwars in breathable fabrics or traditional maxis are your best bet. Throw in some floral jewelry to the mix for a dash of easy chic fun!

A beautiful ceremony in South of France promises an abundance of grace and elegance with a touch of old-world glamour. Time to bring your poised best to the sartorial field. And nothing like a restrained lace or lightly sequined sari in a blush tone and diamond jewels to do the trick.

When in Duabi, think an OTT, colourful and culture-soaked affair. We suggest going the extra mile and giving a nod to Middle-Eastern glamour with your wardrobe. An intricate sari or salwar with ornate gold baubles and smokey eye make-up is the order of the day indeed!

Luxemi’s Destination Wedding Diaries

Luxemi destination wedding guide

The invites have been received, tickets have been booked and dance practices are underway. But the most arduous task still remains — what you should and shouldn’t pack for this much-awaited destination wedding! Sure, destination weddings guarantee an exciting time, Instagram-worthy pictures and dramatic anecdotes but we fashion girls have to work our wardrobe around stingy baggage allowances and that’s no fun. But don’t worry, we got your back! Here are some tips and tricks to guarantee you look fly on the fly.

Rotate it

Carry pieces you can mix and match. We believe that gold blouses are a god send. Whether it’s a sheer lehenga for the sangeet or embroidered palazzos for the mehendi, they can elevate any wedding look in a jiffy. All you need to do is mix up the jewellery and switch the dupatta. So be sure to pack one and plan certain looks around it.

If you plan to wear lehegnas for all the functions, we suggest you get them made without the can-can (frilly petticoat underneath). Instead get the designer to create a separate can-can skirt, which you can, then wear with all your lehengas and flowy skirts!

Sharing is Caring

Being the make-up mavens that we are, it’s a shame that we can’t pack our entire make-up drawer when we’re headed out of town. Luckily, that’s where girlfriends come to the rescue! You can always fall back on fail safe looks like smokey eyes, glittery lids and bold pouts. So divide and conquer, make a Whatsapp group, and designate who needs to carry what.

Jeweled Tales

Jewelry is expensive and risky to carry when travelling, so pack that one statement piece that can be the highlight of most of your looks. Don’t shy away from costume or semi-precious jewelry either. Also look into carrying pieces that are versatile. For instance, you can easily wear a rustic polki haar as a neckpiece on one occasion and double it as a headgear for another function. The fun doesn’t stop here; it can easily be used as a delicate hath phool too. Even if people do call your bluff, at least you won’t be that girl who lost her grandma’s heirloom bangle on the beach!

Shoe Story

We know that in an ideal world you would have packed a separate suitcase just for your footwear. But since you can’t, simply pack 2-3 basics in gold, silver and bronze, ones that will match all your looks. We also suggest limiting the number of heels as they take up more space. Not only are flats easier to carry, they are also more comfortable, which will ensure that you are the last one standing on the dance floor!

The Golden Rules

Some quick tips and tricks to save the day!

  • Pre dry clean and launder everything. Last minute laundering at the hotel can and often does go wrong.
  • Double pack liquids. You don’t want your raw silk sari to be damaged with shampoo stains.
  • Extra lingerie, fewer accessories.
  • It’s always advisable to carry an extra outfit, because you never know!
