Behind the Scenes: Deepica Mutyala’s Indian Wedding Makeup Tutorial

On Set With Deepica Mutyala and Stefanie Syat

Deepica Mutyala isn’t new around these parts. You may recognize her from that insane red lipstick video that went viral earlier this year or from the beauty advice she regularly doles out on social media. We love how she makes beauty approachable with a slew of tips and tricks to make our lives just a bit easier, and of course, way prettier. With our favorite (wedding) season in full swing, we’re already looking for fresh inspiration because how many black smokey eyes can a gal do, right? So how pumped were we when we found out our favorite beauty guru was filming an Indian Wedding Makeup Tutorial? Answer: Very. We got the full low down PLUS a few extra tips that didn’t make it in the video below.

Who: Deepica Mutyala and Stefanie Syet filmed by Jami Saunders & Andre Costantini. Hair by Jeff Chastain and Apparel/Accessories by Luxemi.

Extra Makeup Tips from Deepica:

1) Contouring: If you don’t have dedicated contour products at home, try using your bronzer or a foundation that’s a shade or two darker than your skin tone which gives you the same effect.

2) Concealer: Go heavier than you normally would for a wedding. By picking a concealer that’s a shade lighter than your foundation, you get a natural illumination on your skin, but it’s super important not to go TOO light either. That’s when you see chalkiness!

3) Hair: I did a twist on a traditional braid for my look. My favorite thing to do for weddings is take traditional looks and give it a modern twist. That applies for hair too!

4) Highlighter: Glowing skin is a must for desi weddings! If you don’t have a dedicated highlighter at home, use a shimmer pale eyeshadow and apply it to the parts of your face you want to pop. For me, that’s the bow of my lip, under the brows, corners of the eyes, bridge of the nose, and the bone under your eye.

Birchbox’s Deepica Mutyala on Beauty Tricks for Indian Women

1267672_10200820443303905_31534944_o (1)

At the ripe age of 16, Texas native and now beauty maven Deepica Mutyala had set a goal—that she would move to New York City and ignite her dream of working in the beauty industry. And that’s exactly what this University of Texas, Austin graduate achieved. After stints with companies like L’Oréal USA and L Brands on Victoria’s Secret PINK, Deepica now works as a Senior Manager in Brand Development at Birchbox in NYC. Getting makeovers by Beyonce’s make-up artist (!) and being exposed to the biggest brands in the beauty biz is all part of typical work day for this gal (sounds terrible, right?).

We caught up with this makeup maverick for a quick tete-a-tete on the best beauty trends for Indian women, common mistakes, must-have products and more! Pssst…she even threw in some cool insider trade secrets!

Luxemi: What are the most common beauty mistakes Indian women make when dressing in traditional wear?

Deepica Mutyala: I don’t think there should be any rules with makeup. It should be about your mood and how you feel whether you’re in Indian or western clothes.  Indian girls tend to stick to red lipsticks as their go-to with Indian ensembles but mix it up and have fun, I say! You can completely change the way your outfit looks by just changing your hair and makeup, thus allowing you to repeat that sari at the third wedding of the season (that is, of course, if you haven’t already discovered the beauty of Luxemi!).

What are the latest beauty trends that will lend themselves beautifully to Indian wear?

  • Plum lips and bold brows! I especially love plum lips with white Indian outfits and I am definitely not a believer in the ‘no white after Labor Day’ rule.

  • Braids: I don’t think Indian girls play with braids enough because they fear that it’ll look too traditional. But there are so many ways to experiment with them. My current favorite is a voluminous messy fishtail. It’s a great way to stand out in a room full of straightened or curled hair.

  • Contouring: Contouring is still having its moment and lends itself perfectly to Indian wear. Who doesn’t want defined cheekbones and glowing skin, right?

5 must-have beauty products a desi girl’s kit ought to have?

  • A brow pencil: You know how threading your eyebrows completely changes the look of your face? Filling your brows lends the same effect! It’s a product most Indian women don’t realize they need (because they already have dark, thick brows) but can’t live without once they see the difference it makes.
  • A bold lipstick: I am loving plum lipstick right now. A classic, high pigment plum that I love is M.A.C Cosmetics’ Rebel, but if you’re looking for a light berry shade, I recommend the Cynthia Rowley Beauty creamy lip stain in Dahlia. It’s layerable, so you can add coats for intensity and personal preference.

  • Concealer: I think if you surveyed all Indian women and asked them what their number one beauty concern is, we would say dark under eye circles. Since I battle this problem too, I like using a heavier concealer that also has brightening properties. My current favorite is the Vasanti Instant Pick Me Up Color Correcting Illuminator in shade CC 4. It has the glowing effects that everyone loves from YSL’s Touche Eclat with the coverage power of M.A.C Cosmetics’ concealers—the best of both worlds!

vasanti_instantpickmeupcolourcorrectingilluminator_cc3_900x900_1

  • Highlighter/Illuminator: If you want radiant skin, I have two tips: drink tons of water and find a killer highlighter. I especially love the way highlighter looks when I’m in Indian clothes. You can instantly tell the difference in pictures when you do and don’t wear it. I use a cream highlighter because I have dry skin. My current favorite is the Bio Brightening Stick from W3LL PEOPLE. The stick format makes it really easy to apply.

w3llpeople_biobrightenerstick_moonstone_opened_900x900_2

  • Beautyblender: I’ve never met a makeup artist who didn’t have a beautyblender in their kit. The difference in how your makeup applies is unreal with/without it. It’s especially helpful when you’re contouring to blend with zero streakage. I can’t go back to using any brush again now. Make sure to wet the brush to where it doubles in size before using.

Indian celebrities who nail desi-dressing makeup according to you?

I love the versatility of Deepika Padukone’s beauty looks. She always mixes it up, from dramatic smoky eyes/bold lips to more subtle natural glows. She also gives me major brow envy.

It’s also really exciting to see Mindy Kaling’s makeup looks evolve. I love that she’s not afraid to experiment with different looks across both fashion and beauty and you can tell she’s having fun with it.

Insider beauty tricks you’d like to share with us?

If you have extreme dark circles, use a bright red or orange lipstick as a base under your eyes before applying concealer. The bright pigmentation of the lipstick evens out your skin tone. We work with celebrity makeup artist Daniel Martin at Birchbox and he mentioned that this is one of his favorite beauty tricks to use on Mindy Kaling. Major game changer!

Most people apply mascara outward going towards their ears to create a sort of cat eye look. But for a more wide-awake makeup look, apply your mascara inward. By re-directing the lashes this way, your eyes will pop and look more refreshed. I learned this trick from Mally Roncal who has been the go-to makeup artist for celebrities like Beyoncé and Jennifer Lopez and now has her own beauty line called Mally Beauty. The products are all extremely brown-girl friendly (high pigments)!

Luxemi + M.A.C Cosmetics’ Fall wedding make-up guide

While in our previous post we brought you an outfit guide for the upcoming wedding season with Nishka Lulla, putting together the perfect look doesn’t end there. The most stunning of ensembles can fall short if not paired with the right makeup. So we roped in Sonic Sarwate, Senior Artist, M.A.C Cosmetics India to present a guide on achieving two distinct yet equally stunning looks – just what the season ordered!

M.A.C make up artist Sonic Sarwate

Sonic Sarwate

“The key to a successful wedding look is to keep it simple and real. Do not match your makeup to your outfit colors; in fact use colors which compliment it. Dark mouths and shades of reds are big this wedding season. The makeup should enhance your beauty and not transform you into a different person,” the man with the magic brush says. We believe him…after all he does know best!

ALL ABOUT THE EYES

Sarwate himself was behind this look which we spotted and loved at Masaba Gupta-Satya Paul show at PCJ Delhi Couture Week.

This look is the perfect marriage of retro glam with a futuristic flair. Turn to it for the sangeet, mehndi or pheras.

Get the look:

  1. Prep the skin with M.A.C Fix+ hydrating spray followed by M.A.C Studio Moisture Cream and really work them into the skin.
  2. Use M.A.C Pro and conceal palette to cover any shadows on the skin and even out the skin tone. Use translucent powder to set it.
  3. Use M.A.C Sculpt and Shape powder to contour the face. Curl the lashes and groom the brows using minimal products, as the focus of the look is on the eye liner.
  4. Use M.A.C fluideline in Blacktrack to outline a big winged out line going upward towards the temples.
  5. Fill in the inner corners and outer edge of the liner with blacktrack followed by M.A.C Chromacake in Pure White to create white and grey streaks in the center of the lid and blending the white with black. This will create a X-ray effect in the liner.
  6. A touch of M.A.C reflects in Pink and Pearl will mimic the sequin work used along with prints on the garments.
  7. Use concealer on the lips to create an even tone and strip off any kind of redness on the lips.
  8. And finish the look using M.A.C Viva Glam lipstick in GAGA2 with fingertips on the lips.

BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL

When we spotted Bollywood actress Huma Qureshi sporting this look on the IIFA Rocks red carpet, we just knew we would  be trying it this wedding season. Simple but impactful enough to grab eyeballs, it can work well for just about any wedding function.

  1. To achieve beautifully luminous skin, start with moisturizing the skin followed by M.A.C Prep+Prime Natural Radiance.
  2. Use M.A.C Select Moisture Cover concealer to cover any discoloration. Add M.A.C foundation in Mineralize Moisture Fluid for a radiant and flawless skin.
  3. Add translucent powder on the center of the face to take away any excessive shine. Contour the face with M.A.C Mineralize Skinfinish in Dark.
  4. Groom the brows using M.A.C Velux Brow Pencil. Use M.A.C eye shadow in Wood Winked on the 3/4th of the eye lid.
  5. On the outer corner, that is the remaining 1/4th of the eye lid use M.A.C eyeshadow in Embark blending with Wood Winked.
  6. Use M.A.C Eye Pro longwear eye liner in Black Ice to line the top and bottom lash line. Smudge the black with M.A.C eye shadow in Embark using M.A.C Brush no 219.
  7. Wing out the liner to achieve the most desirable almond shape.
  8. Curl the lashes and use several coats of M.A.C False lash mascara.
  9. To finish the look and get that perfect pout, start with using M.A.C Prep+Prime lip for smooth application and long-lasting color stay.
  10.  Line the lips with M.A.C lip liner in Currant and fill it with M.A.C Lipstick in Diva.

So go ahead, try these looks –  we’d love to see how they look on you!
